Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter took place on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for art from her aunt Denise. Aunt Denise worked during the night shift as a nurse to ensure she could pursue her love for art literature and theater throughout the day. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt showed the film to DuVernay. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's model of that art can be an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother with a conscience for social issues, and pushed DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama to inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began producing television news as a student. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to look over the rubbish inside the house of a member on the jury. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalism tasks and decided to move into the world of public relations. DuVernay began her first position as a publicity specialist in a small production studio right after she graduated from school. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective.
